Fred Adlous is a store which provides arts and craft supplys which also has a laser cutter which can be used if booked a appointment. We went to visit Fred Aldous in Manchester to have some samples cut out and to get the experience. You have to have your design saved as Version 8 in Illustrator. The price of the materials Fred Aldous can supply for you can range as they have so many varities of materials and colours such as wood, mirror, felt and acrylic. Its cost's £1 per minute to have your design cut but the length of time to cut varies as it would for example take a lot longer to cut through wood as it would with paper. Before taking you design to Fred Aldous make sure that in Illustrator there are no double lines as the laser cutter will then start cutting it out twice over the same points and obviously costing you double in price! Also all lines in Illustrator must be matched up prefectly or the laser cutter wont be able to cut it properly, If there are any problems with your design One of the memebers of staff can adjust you design but if it time consuming it can cost you a minimum of £50 extra. So always double check before hand, also if you design has any text of it the cutter will cut it out face down so your text does not have to be backwards.
We had a member of staff Paul nice enough to adjust anyones designs that had a problems. The laser cutter will not cut through all materials though, it would of ingrave through something like metal.
The staff were really helpfull and polite and i would recommend anyone to go there as the quaily of the laser cutter is outstanding! i was so happy with my sample motifs!
