Lauren Moriarty

Lauren Moriarty designs these "noodle boxs" which i think could be a really quirky room devider! also it could be used for storage? The use of the random holes made by the material. I like these pieces of work because they are really different to anything else but still or sophisicated because of its minamilistic look and lack of colours.
i think using white on white or tranparants is something to consider as that is what has caught my attention most on all these room dividers, the lack of being too complicated! and use of minilistic colours, not being solid and making a room appear bigger?

My Most Successful Pattern!

This is my motif for one of my patterns that i think has worked really well, for some reason even though i saved this in many diffferent ways it wouldnt let me uplad to whole of the pattern, also it hasnt uploaded in the correct colour, the purple is supposed to be darkbrown and the rest two shades of pink, sorry! but you should get the general feel of it!
i think that this is my favourite one just because i love the way the colours run in together and blend so well, none of my other designs complimented each other like this one and i also like the fact that they are solid shapes but the swirls i used the rubber for holds them all together, also because of the way i have placed them ad rotated them, i love the fact that there is almost like another motif appearing in the middle in a circle shape, i think this makes it more interesting as well! and so think this is a really successful piece!
I really struggled with Illustrator and i think because i wasnt really sure on the tools, i experimented alot more and in the end came up with two of my favourite designs.
were as i was more comfortable on photoshop so maybe i didnt do as much as i could of done with the patterns!
i love this one though!

Cherry Tenneson Report

www.axisweb.org

Cherry Tenneson also known best as Tenneson & Dale started off as working in a factory producing signs, as she had a passion for signs. she worked there for 5 years producing signs for NHS and Job Centre Plus, she left two years ago and then started working in gallerys and shops making vinyl letters for notice boards. She was kind enough to tell us about the work you were expected to produce, what worked and what didnt. Cherry Tenneson explained that for best results its best not to go any smaller then 12cm for vinyl cutting and that foam ex is the easiest material to work with, she went on to tell us about things you must consider like if you were to do lettering for a window you must make sure that the text is printed back to front and that if the text is a large piece make sure it is rolled with the text on top because when it is underneath the tend to move and that will then effect the lettering. There are different ways of applying vinyl you can either put it down dry, which then you would roll it on or you can sitck it down wet and with that you would then have a squeegee for pushing all the water out. She also explained that canvas is one of the hardest things to get vinyl on it and that you have to have patience with viynl to get the best results.
Cherry Tenneson is well known now as Tenneson & Dale as they have made pieces for the stockport art gallery and corner house Manchester. Their work is know based on politics and has a more graphic approach with graphs and charts.
I think the work she does know is very simple but very clever as well and their use of viynl is inspiring!

Fred Aldous Lazer Cutting Report

Fred Aldous Ltd
37 Lever St
Manchester

www.fredaldous.co.uk

Fred Adlous is a store which provides arts and craft supplys which also has a laser cutter which can be used if booked a appointment. We went to visit Fred Aldous in Manchester to have some samples cut out and to get the experience. You have to have your design saved as Version 8 in Illustrator. The price of the materials Fred Aldous can supply for you can range as they have so many varities of materials and colours such as wood, mirror, felt and acrylic. Its cost's £1 per minute to have your design cut but the length of time to cut varies as it would for example take a lot longer to cut through wood as it would with paper. Before taking you design to Fred Aldous make sure that in Illustrator there are no double lines as the laser cutter will then start cutting it out twice over the same points and obviously costing you double in price! Also all lines in Illustrator must be matched up prefectly or the laser cutter wont be able to cut it properly, If there are any problems with your design One of the memebers of staff can adjust you design but if it time consuming it can cost you a minimum of £50 extra. So always double check before hand, also if you design has any text of it the cutter will cut it out face down so your text does not have to be backwards.
We had a member of staff Paul nice enough to adjust anyones designs that had a problems. The laser cutter will not cut through all materials though, it would of ingrave through something like metal.
The staff were really helpfull and polite and i would recommend anyone to go there as the quaily of the laser cutter is outstanding! i was so happy with my sample motifs!

Mia Cullin

I like the idea that a room devider doesnt have to be a solid piece, i think that with the cut out bits this makes it look softer and with its off white colour wouldnt over power a room!
i dont know if the beaded curtain behind is supposed to be part of the design but i like the idea of something being loose, rather then a solid wall!

Studio Arihiro Miyake

The first picture is something i will sample out, using white on white, white on transparant! i love how soft it makes the room feel! and the idea of text as well, as i have used that a fair bit in my work for this project! i really like the idea of a curtain as well, something not so solid!

Studie Lilica

Even though this is used almost as a light shade, i think that this could be used as a room divider, if you were to stretch to material in a corner of a room, you could make a study corner? or hide some furniture or storage you did not want to see, i like the idea that this is so simple and yet so effective!

Design Report - Out Of The Ordinary

Millennium Sheffield Museum
48 Arundel Gate
Sheffield,
South Yorkshire,

The Out Of The Ordinary exhibiton at the Sheffield Millennium Gallery was really impressive, at first glance its very contemporary, clean, sophisticated, and spacious. With white walls it shows off every designers/ artist work off to its full potential and has your full attention.
What i really liked about this exhibition is that each designer/ artist had their own section to show their work which definitely is a positive as you didnt then feel like you had to run to the next piece of work quickly with out being able to take it all in, you could pace yourself and realy look at each piece of work they were showing.
Each piece of work at Out Of The Ordinary were so different from each other from being so delicate you could only admire with the eye to being able to interact with their work and be part of it. Which was great as it really kept my interest - not knowing what was round the next corner!

When you first walk in to the Timorous Beasties exhibition its very simple and sophisticated but yet its still a very poweful and striking layout. The work was based on interiors and the layout reflected that really well. The exhibition shown chairs, lamps, lamp shades and also had one mattress in the middle of the room they had designed. The colours were muted and at first glance, even the lamps appeared subtle from the outside which gave it a very contemporary feel.
I think the actual layout of the room impressed me more then their work as looking at their work closely none of their designs were well executed. I think that their exhibition though reflected the gallery well as the building was very contemporary, minimalistic with big glass front windows, silver furniture and white walls, it was well presented!
One thing that impressed me most about the Timerous Beasties exhibition is that in the corner of the room there were books on insects, creatures and anythign that had influenced them and their work, which i think was nice to see, as normally you never get to see what inspires designers unless you do research but it was nice to see that and it gave the impression that they were very confident about their work and its style!

Design Report - Putting On The Glitz

Whitworth Gallery

250 Oxford Road

Manchester

M15 6ER

0161 275 7450

http://www.whitworth.manchester.ac.uk/

When you first walk in to the Whitworth the rooms are well presented and reflect the work there well, for example the second room you walk in to at the Whitworth there a five huge pieces of art, three of them are based on trees and oppersite them are huge windows showing the park area and the floor in front of them is wood which i dont think could compliment the work anymore if it tried!
In Putting On The Glitz exhibiton they show the work to its full potential, like they put tradional, delicate pieces of work behind glass to keep it from any harm but you can still admire, they then use the more contemporary pieces of work in larger scales, in massive rolls which is how you would expect to buy a wallpaper but this is on a much larger scale which i think is a very quirky way of presenting work and gives the room a more contemporary feel.
They have a rage of different types of designs of florals and geometrics which you can clearly see have had such a massive impact on todays designs. which again compliments the room and designs by putting tradional and contemporary together, that actually work together!

Design Report - Kendals

House of Fraser
PO Box 60
Deansgate
Manchester
M3 2QG
0844 800 3744

Kendals is a department offering interior for wallpapers, materials and furnishings. It has been in the line now for 170 years and is now located in House of Fraser as they took over in 2005, Alhough it still has the name engraved above the door. It is the largest department store in England and well known for its architectural design building.
When i first walked in to the House of Fraser i thought it was very dated, nothing about it was contemporary, the lay out of the shop, the interior they had chosen for the department, nothing screamed out! When i went upstairs to Kendals, that still was very dated, it may have something to do with the architecture being Art Deco? But even so i feel this refelected badly on what they had to offer furnishings and interior wise seen as everything today is contemporary and clean.
The staff were very friendly but i think lacked knowledge of the present fashions and designs out there. The whole department store felt trapped in a time warp.

Design Report - Urban Outfitters

Urban Outfitters
42-43 Market Street
Manchester
M1 1WR
United Kingdom
0161-817-6640
http://www.urbanoutfitters.co.uk/

Urban Outfitters actually started in 1970 as students selling inexpensive clothes and iteams to dorm rooms and appartments, after that they then opened a small shop selling used vintage clothing, bags and accessories, they became quiet successful and opened up larger shops and became known to the industry for their quirky vintage style.
The still produce their own recycled clothes urban renewal which sticks by their trade of vintage, they also have boutique and deisgner ranges as well. The two designer brands i looked at were Insight and Religion Clothing but they also offer Cheap Monday, Full Circle & Something Else.
The store aims its clothing at customers between the ages of 18-30 and definitely aimed at anyone working in the fashion industry.
Their store represents their style of clothing really well, as the shop layout and window displays are sophisticated vintage but yet very stylish, with a mix and match feel as well.
The staff working at Urban Outfitters were helpfull and represented the store well as they were very quirky, vintage & stylish.
Their clothes have the same feel to them, nothing to brightly coloured or clumsy in pattern, just a very casual, clean and comfortable, just like the shop itself!
